Hi everyone,

I have received three emails from ST fans asking me to have a go at producing the 3D LCARS that appears in the TNG Series 1, Episode The Last Outpost.* This is where Data is trying to explain the TKON Empire whilst playing with a Chinese Puzzle.*

Has anyone attempted to re-create this LCARS 3D Screen?* :)

I'm going to have a go.

you mean this one?

sounds like a interesting project. Give us some progress reports when you have them.

Yes,

According to my ST collector’s edition covering TNG the VFX team with ‘Mike Okuda’ created holographic 3D displays or objects that interacted with the crew. The last Outpost ‘Mike Okuda’ created a traditional LCARS animation using film cells, which was then transferred to video and then added to the shot sequences of Data.* Very ambitious at that time, but, because of the costs did not go into further development.

I keep you updated.

The forum wouldn't allow me to post as a new subject????? Possibe read or write difficulties on the server I suspect again. :(

Anyhow, here is my animated version of this 3D LCARS:

Hope you all like it.

Looks amazing Adge... color, layout and overall design looks spot on.

Thumbs up my friend.

The only little (and I mean reeeeeeaally liiittle) knit pick I have is that the text doesn't flow very smoothly in the tweens.* I would suggest breaking it (Ctrl+B) into a regular object.* Other than that, it's superb.

Hi Lee,

The Text on my monitor shows the text smoothly.* All text on this animation in the tweens has been broken from text to graphic. If its not flowing smoothly, then all perhaps all I can do is make the stage tweening longer and then speed up the frame rate.

Well, I have looked at it, and I haven't used Flash in a while, so I don't remember everything, so I guess you're right.* I guess it's Adobe's fault then?

that's aweaome, adge!!
seems that the issue 3dlcars has actually a revival.... bacer up at okudagrams is fascinated to create soemthing like it.
unfortunately i'm not familiar with 3d drawing, so the only thing is to lurk, what you did - lol

Initially I did some sketches to clear out what it means for LCARS to be 3D.

Eventually I decided to implement this idea with real-time technologies.

My latest try is based on Augmented Reality technologies:

Even better, you can try it yourself here!

Hi Bracer,

Nice to get to know you and welcome.* Deif has mentioned your LCARS skills to me on many occasions. :-)* Your 3D interface tutorial was very interesting indeed. Holograms I have played around with, and to get that effect I found it takes a lot of patience, that said, you appear to have master it damn well, great stuff indeed.

Hi Adge, I have come across your website often when looking for LCARS stuff and even get to know a little about you bout how you learn Flash from scratch and stuff.

I am very glad to finally greet the person that did the site.

Deif had been nothing but more than generous when he talks about my LCARS "skills".
I am really impress with Deif's instinctive ability to make it look right, the colour scheme, the thickness of the lines [Thick and thin can really help give you the right variations...or it can F up your LCARS. Somehow...Deif make it work, I don't even dare to say I have a good understanding of the usage of Line thickness variations implementation.]

I had posted this on Jose Forum, but it's pretty relevant here too I suppose:

After my test with the "Flat" version of LCARS [it's not really 3D...just multiple overlay of Flat 2D LCARS interfaces in 3D Space], I had been wondering how should I display the "data"/"Schematic" of any object in that 3D Holographic LCARS world.

The Ironman augmented reality experiment doesn't look convincing visually as a holographic display for a 3D model...hence, I proceed to give this look a try:

You can see the video here:

This demo doesn't utilize augmented reality technology as I am merely focusing on creating the proper look and feel for the time being.

Bracer,

Facinating indeed.* Thanks for showing.
Perhaps an area that could be put to good use is how the film industry now over lay with two camera angle shots, and we all sit down with 3D Glasses! :)

That would be what one would deem as an Augmented Reality Glass.
Once we've achieve that there will be a BIG revelation.
