I thought I would start off the new year by being being a little more pro-active in stirring up discussions in this Community. Think of it as my new year resolution. So starting today, I will open up some new topics and order to get the members interacting together. These discussions will appear on both the main page in the forums, but you will only be able to reply on the forums. I'm hoping that these questions, topics, discussions, whatever will make everyone here participate. I'll start now with the LCARSC.com first official discussion topic.

Are LCARS used by everyone in the Federation even civilians?

What do you think the rest of the Federation uses for computer displays? Do you think that civilians uses the same type of LCARS that we see on all Starship? Well we've seen a few episodes in TNG showing off other kinds of displays that didn't look like LCARS.

“Family” TNG - Credit to Trekcore.com for this image.

This image was seen in the episode “Family” of TNG is a direct exemple of that.

In my opinion, I think there is a complete different interface for civilian computers. But I don't only want to see your opinions, but maybe sketches, displays of what you think they would look like around the time of Voyager and Nemesis. We see often Kmpr´rak making magnificent exemple of civilian road signs, books and other great stuff from Battlestar Galactica. I would love to see what we can come up with as a community for the 24th century of the Trek Universe.

I'll posting some WIPs of my own later.

Thanks for reading.

good idea, explorer

as for the issue i agree with you. i don't think, that in the civil realm of the star trek universe exist only LCARS. there will be a different kinds of operation systems as LCARS too (like in the real world of today with windows, mac, linux etc.).
i find LCARS optimized for spacetravel vessels and so i think, that civilian federation vessels have LCARS systems too, but in the everyday live there will be diversoty of computer OS.
just my two cents

To me, LCARS is the 24th century equilevant of Windows; a well known, heavily advertised operating system with a sizeable market share, but far from the only system.

Who knows, with the current developments in touchscreen computing, windows might well turn into something akin to LCARS eventually.

This is very interesting, as all Starfleet Ships, Docks and facilities have LCARS. I think there may be a slight agreed enforced Starfleet security protocol in what is available on the LCARS interface just for use by civilian or non Starfleet personnel all down to clearances perhaps? Just a thought, as civilian traders need maps and general info.

I'm sure there were a few instances where it was implied that civilian computer systems where the same as LCARS on Federation Starships but all information was controlled via clearance levels? I seem to recall a couple of episodes of TNG that showed this? I would imagine that the LCARS system was the equivelent of operating systems to us, perhaps with different functionalities based on use.

Didn't Picards nephew have an LCARS PADD for his school report in the episode Family? And what about The Raven in Voyager? In Dark Frontier this wasn't seen as a specific Federation ship but this was later changed in Raven.

I could of course be making the whole thing up :P
