LCARS lighting effects

I managed to lose all my bookmarks a while ago and have just managed to find these forums again and if I may be so bold, I'd like to ask you great artists a question about LCARS.

I've started messing about in illustrator, 3DS max and photoshop again and have been wondering (specifically regarding Explorers great Voyager LCARS) how one would go about making them look like they are backlit?

For instance, some of Explorer's LCARS have great effects which make his work look like it does on the show's backlit props.

Does anyone else use these techniques in their art or modelling software?
